12/7/2023 0 Comments Grown golden zebra loachNamed for their coloring, clown loaches are pale orange with black spots. Most loaches are native to southern and central Asia, and several species of loach are found in Europe and Africa. The most popular aquarium loaches are Asian loaches, such as clown loaches and kuhli loaches. The pointface loach was the first loach to be recognized in 1940. The loach’s superfamily name, Cobitidae, was a term that Aristotle used to refer to “small fishes that bury.” This name was described in Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus’s 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. I've never seen my sidthimunkis attack or kill any snail larger than a ramshorn.Advertisements Scientific order: Cyprinidae Common names Loach Distribution: Europe, northern Africa, and central and Southeast Asia Size: 2.5–12 inches or more, depending on the species of loach Life expectancy: 5–10 years Color: A variety of colors, including yellow, brown, orange, black, and silver Diet: Omnivore Temperament: Peaceful Minimum tank size: 20–150 gallons, depending on the species of loach Temperature: 75–86☏ pH: 5.5–7.8 pH Hardness: 3–10 dGH Care level: Easy Breeding: Egg-layer Origin & Distribution The trapdoor snail later died, though it wasn't completely due to the attack. In the Loaches defense the trapdoor snail was already week and sickly, I suspect the histrionica sensed that and seized the opportunity for an easy meal. I've seen my histrionica tear into larger ramshorn snail's and one time a Japanese trapdoor snail (larger than a Nerite so I thought it was safe) was viciously attacked by a group of histrionica before I saved it's life. Secondarily as a food source for my Loaches and at one time had Pea puffers. I've kept a variety of snail's in all my tanks primarily for their proficiency at algae control and "clean up crew". If the Loaches get hungry, or in the mood for some snail, hopefully they'll go for the ramshorn snail's instead of the Nerite snail's. So as long as they're well fed I'm thinking the Nerite snail's will be okay for awhile until they're done eating the algae that's grown on everything and I move them back to the other tank. When I fast them, or forget to feed them they go on a snail murdering spree. And So they let the snail's live another day. I feed them well with a very wide variety of quality foods which they gorge themselves on and swim around happily looking like pregnant women with their fat bellies. However there are also currently over a dozen ramshorn snail's in this same tank that the Loaches sort of ignore for the most part.īecause my Loaches are spoiled. But make no mistake, I am fully aware the Loach can and will kill the snail if the mood strikes him. Later I put the Nerite back with the Loaches after concluding that the Loach was just being curious about his "new" inhabitants. So I immediately removed the nerite and re-assessed the incident. Though at the moment I thought for sure it was going in for the kill. I did have a bit of a scare at first, within minutes of adding them to this tank, when one of the histrionica expertly flipped over one Nerite snail and began probing it's underside before swimming away. I just did a head count and there's 1 on the back glass, 1 on a decoration and 1 on the front glass, so Yup they're still alive It's been almost a week now and I've been keeping a close eye on them. I recently decided to take a gamble with 3 of my Nerite snail's and moved them into my Loach tank with my sidthimunkis and histrionica.
